Willy Adames was hospitalized after being struck by a foul ball in the Brewers dugout on Friday night. Here is everything to know on his health.

Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames was struck in the dugout by a foul ball in the bottom of the second inning on Friday night against the San Francisco Giants. The ball ricocheted off the bat of Brian Anderson and hit Adames before he was able to get his hands up to completely guard his face.

Adames fell back in the dugout immediately but was conscious moments after (a warning: The video linked shows Adames getting hit by the foul ball) the incident as he was looked at by the medical staff.

Craig Counsell described him as, "…alert, responsive the whole time. No fractures." But he also said that he was taken to the hospital and will be kept there overnight with the expectation that he will be released on Saturday.

Counsell confirmed immediately that it'll be a stint on the IL for Adames for a concussion. Here is a video of the incident, which does not show the moment Adames was hit.

Willy Adames injury update

Willy Adames, all things considered, appears to be in relatively good shape. Taking a foul ball to the head/face area is scary and dangerous, and the precedent in situations like that is not good.

In 2007, Mike Coolbaugh, a base coach for a minor league team, was killed after he was struck by a foul ball line drive which ultimately led to base coaches being mandated to wear helmets on the field.

Though he is hospitalized, Adames is alert and expected to be able to leave in less than 24 hours. That's good news.

Adames, as far as the broadcast showed, never lost consciousness, though he is confirmed to have sustained a concussion. The path back to a concussion can be different case by case and the lingering effects of them impact people differently.
