The MLB Home Run Derby has been around for decades, but New York Mets star Pete Alonso is closing in on history. Who has the most MLB Home Run Derby titles?

The greatest era of the MLB Home Run Derby was the 1990's. Chicks dig the long ball, or at least they did back then, which is why the likes of Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire and Ken Griffey Jr. put their home run hitting skills to the test.

Griffey Jr. fared quite well, which is why his three Home Run Derby titles are still the most in baseball history. That record may not hold forever, though, as Mets star Pete Alonso is closing in. Alonso has two to his name so far, and with a win on Monday night, could equal The Kid.

That, of course, was prior to one of Alonso's derby wins.

Who has the most MLB Home Run Derby titles?

Ken Griffey Jr. is the only player to win three Derbies, having done so in 1994, 1998 and 1999. It's just one of many MLB records The Kid holds. Alonso, who has proven to be a successful power hitter in his own right, has the best chance at finally removing Griffey's name from the record books in that respect.

Pitching to Alonso will be his former travel baseball coach when he was a kid. In doing so, Alonso will fulfill a childhood promise.

"When I was a kid, I made a promise to (Friedlein) when he was throwing me batting practice," Alonso said, via MLB.com. "It's one of those things when you're a kid and you kind of daydream and wish something would happen. Now that it's here, I want to keep good on my promise. I'm really excited. I know Mike is excited, too."

How many times has Pete Alonso won the Home Run Derby?

Alonso has won the Derby twice. Considering he's one of the best power sluggers in baseball today and seems to love the event, there's a good chance he could add a third belt at some point in his career.
