What will happen to Overwatch loot boxes and tokens when Overwatch 2 comes out?

Blizzard has confirmed Overwatch 2 will completely replace Overwatch when it reaches its full launch, making the old game unplayable. In that transition, the game will move from a loot box monetization scheme to the now-more-common battle pass system.

But what will happen to all the loot boxes and in-game tokens players have accumulated over the years since Overwatch's launch? Blizzard provided an answer to that question in a Reddit AMA on Wednesday.

Loot Boxes, OWL Tokens, Credits, Competitive Points Transfer to Overwatch 2

Blizzard's Overwatch Commercial Leader and Vice President Jon Spector told inquiring fans their existing currencies would transfer over to Overwatch 2.

"We'll share a more detailed explanation on all of these topics before Overwatch 2 goes live in October. To give you a quick answer now though, those existing currencies (credits, OWL tokens, and competitive points) will come with you into Overwatch 2, and ahead of launch, any unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened with your account receiving all the contents directly," Spector wrote.

Spector went on to clarify that although Overwatch 1 tokens would transfer to Overwatch 2, the sequel's new virtual currency would be the default. That means there will be "things in OW2 that will not be purchasable with those OW1 credits."

Spector didn't specify what would determine which items were purchasable with which currencies, or share examples of items that wouldn't be purchasable with Overwatch 1 tokens, but it's likely new cosmetic types such as Mythic skins will fall into that category.

Blizzard has previously confirmed that all the cosmetics players have earned in Overwatch 1 will follow them into the sequel.

The next Overwatch 2 beta begins June 28, and the full game is slated for release Oct. 4.
