If you’re trying out your first robot vacuum, you’ll be faced with a few decisions. Many popular models now come with a self-emptying bin to let you go weeks without ever touching the device. Do you have specific location needs for your vacuuming? Several vacuums let you set “no-go” zones or supports voice assistants like Google Assistant or Alexa.

Do you have pets or a lot of carpets to keep clean? If so, opt for a device that pushes a higher level of suction power. If you’re concerned about security, a machine with fewer capabilities might be more attractive. (Some manufacturers still make dumb models that bounce around the room like an old screensaver, picking up everything they touch.) And, if you’ve got kids or just a messier house than most, you might want to consider a machine that also has a built-in mop.

Shark AV993 IQ Robot Vacuum

This solid little self-propelled vacuum is notable for its intuitive controls. Scheduling routes and cleanup times is easy with the SharkClean app, and it can also take voice commands through Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. The AV993 has a self-cleaning brush roll, so hair and other items don't wrap around it and clog its progress. Side brushes ably pick up stuff on the edges of its path as well. It can run for around 80 minutes before recharging, and if it's in the middle of a clean it will return automatically to its docking station and pick up where it left off once its battery is full.

Roborock S7 Robot Vacuum and Mop Combo

This versatile little vacuum is a LIDAR-equipped self-directed cleaning robot that employs sonic mopping to vibrate off dried-on gunk. It definitely punches above its mid-price weight class, boasting reliably strong suction and battery life. Roborock also built in a proprietary carpet detection feature that raises the mop head when the surface changes. It also employs ultrasonic signals to determine the pile depth of carpets and adjust suction accordingly. The proprietary app lets you set boundaries, schedule cleaning and more.
