After revealing the smaller PlayStation 5 console yesterday, Sony has today confirmed that we will be able to upgrade the internal storage using an SSD.

The original PS5 and Digital Edition included an M.2 bay under one of the detachable case plates, which currently accepts up to an 8TB SSD (as long as it's fast enough). However, it was unclear when the 30% smaller PS5 Slim was unveiled if it had lost the M.2 bay as a consequence of the shrinkage.

Thankfully, as IGN reports, Sony confirmed it managed to retain the option to upgrade the available internal storage in the new design. At the same time, the amount of storage the PS5 Slim ships with has been increased from the 825GB found in the original consoles to 1TB. With that change, it means you could potentially upgrade the smaller console to have a maximum of 9TB of storage space available.

If you'd prefer to own the larger version of the PS5, you'd better grab one soon. Sony said that once existing stock has been sold, the PS5 Slim models will be the only ones available. We don't have a specific date yet, but both versions of the smaller PS5 are set to go on sale in November in the US. However, if you purchase a PS5 on or before Oct. 20, Sony will throw in a free game.
