Shell Plc will buy more liquefied natural gas from Qatar and supply the commodity to the Netherlands under a long-term deal, marking the Gulf nation’s second major contract with a European oil firm this month.

Starting in 2026, QatarEnergy will deliver as much as 3.5 million tons of LNG to the Netherlands annually for 27 years. That comes a week after Doha signed a similar deal with France’s TotalEnergies SE.

Qatar Seeks LNG Buyers, Leveraging Supply Fears in Europe

The decades-long deals preferred by Qatar — which vies with the US and Australia as the world’s top LNG supplier — have become more attractive after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine upended energy markets and prompted European nations to prioritize security of supply over green targets.

Qatar is investing tens of billions of dollars to increase its production capacity in the next few years.
