Mark your calendars: Smartphone vendor Nothing plans on holding a launch event for its second-generation product on July 11.

The company today sent out an email about the launch event, which will stream via Nothing.tech at 11 a.m. EST/8 a.m. PST.

Interestingly, Nothing is using the image of an octopus’s tentacles to promote the upcoming event. “Come to the bright side,” the email adds.

Our guess is that the Nothing Phone (2) will be able to change color; some species of octopus do the same as a form of camouflage. In contrast, Nothing might use the color-changing feature to help the phone stand out.

The company’s previous product, the Phone (1), contained some LED lighting on the back. The so-called “Glyph” interface can light up when you receive a notification or call, and be configured with different patterns. However, the LED lighting was restricted to only one color: white. So it’s possible Nothing designed the second-generation phone to emit a whole variety of colors, giving owners plenty of configuration options.

The second-gen product will also mark Nothing’s formal entry into the US market when the Nothing Phone (1) only officially launched in Europe and India for around $500.

Nothing’s founder, Carl Pei, has said the second-generation phone will be a “premium” step up from the previous model. But it’ll use a slightly older Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, instead of a Gen 2 chip. Pei is hoping the phone will shake up the US market by offering an alternative to Apple’s iPhone. Stay tuned for our coverage and review.
