Hangar 13 has confirmed that they are working on an "all-new Mafia project."

It's been 20 years since Mafia first hit the gaming sphere and, to celebrate, a number of Mafia devs got together for a 20th anniversary interview. Outside of reflecting on the series' history, Hangar 13 General Manager Roman Hladík confirmed that a new Mafia project was on the way.

"I'm happy to confirm we've started work on an all-new Mafia project!" Hladík said. "While it's a few years away and we can't share anything more right now, we're really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories."

Mafia: Definitive Edition publisher 2K have also been in on the celebrations, confirming again via Twitter that work had begun on the new project.

Aside from Mafia: Definitive Edition, the last main entry into the series was 2016's Mafia III. Fans have since been speculating that Mafia 4 could be on the way, though neither 2K or Hangar 13 have confirmed whether this new project will be the long-awaited Mafia 4.

The Mafia games take inspiration from historial settings, from the Great Depression to the 1960s. Each game takes place in a fictional setting inspired by real-life American cities. Gameplay is largely open world, and sees players take on the role of characters who, in some way or another, are involved with organized crime.

At the time of writing there is no definitive timeline for the upcoming Mafia project's release, with Hangar 13 saying that the game is still "a few years away."
