After Ian Happ hit Willson Contreras on the backswing, Miles Mikolas did the dumbest thing possible by throwing at the Cubs batter and getting ejected.

Things got crazy in St. Louis as the Cardinals and Cubs faced off on Thursday night.

Only two batters has been dispatched before the drama struck. Ian Happ caught Willson Contreras on the backswing, sending the catcher to the dirt and then out of the game.

Even though Happ and Contreras hugged on his way back to the dugout, pitcher Miles Mikolas didn't take kindly to the carelessness of the Cubs outfielder. The next pitch was high and inside. The one after that struck Happ in the side. And the umpires didn't take kindly to that either.

Mikolas was ejected and Oli Marmol joined him after coming out of the dugout to argue the decision.

Miles Mikolas throwing at Ian Happ twice was silly

The broadcast was furious over the decision but this isn't a hard one to adjudicate. It's plain to see Happ didn't hit Contreras on purpose. Thinking he did is the height of delusion. But out of some misguided sense of "protecting" his catcher, Mikolas retaliated and MLB wants none of that. He sent the message with the first one up at Happ's ear and the umps let it slide. Going for a second bite was silly and Mikolas has only himself to blame for the ejection.

The Cardinals paid for it too. Dakota Hudson came in to replace Mikolas and gave up three runs before finally logging the final out of the inning. The Cubs added a couple more in the top of the third and another in the top of the fourth, taking a 6-0 lead before Andrew Knizner's home run put St. Louis on the board.

Everything about this season has been embarrassing for St. Louis and Thursday night's activities simply continued the trend.
