Liverpool have contacted Bayern Munich target Max Eberl as they explore their options for a sporting director.

Liverpool have made contact with the representatives of former RB Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl as they evaluate their options for the future, 90min understands.

The man currently in the role at Anfield, Jorg Schmadtke, was lured out of retirement this summer and signed a one-year deal which also included the option to part ways after the summer transfer window, in which he helped oversee the arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

While Liverpool have been thoroughly impressed with Schmadtke, club officials are aware of the short-term nature of their contract with the 59-year-old and are therefore exploring all their options.

Sources have confirmed to 90min that Liverpool have reached out to Eberl, who left his position with Leipzig in September after less than 12 months in the role, to gauge his interest in making the move to Anfield.

Eberl is looking for a new position and is welcoming interest from across Europe, although 90min understands Bayern Munich are confident they will be able to strike a deal with Eberl.

Importantly, Liverpool have not decided to move on from Schmadtke at this point. Those in charge at Anfield believe the German works well with manager Jurgen Klopp, who he described as his "superior" earlier this season.

"I was aware of my position from the outset," Schmadtke told Welt am Sonntag. "I knew the job description and went for it. I accept and respect this British combination in general. And in the specific case with Jurgen Klopp as my superior, it's even easier for me. The name Klopp stands for itself.

"It is well known that things are a little different in England than in Germany. The coach, who is called the manager here, is the decision-maker and determiner. So Jurgen Klopp is the pacesetter in Liverpool. In principle, I am a service provider, the assistant for Jurgen and the one who is responsible for the implementation of ideas and activities."

Schmadtke's position will continue to be reviewed as the season progresses but he would have to negotiate a new contract if he is to remain at Anfield beyond the end of the current campaign, and it is for that reason that Liverpool are drawing up a list of potential replacements.
