Francis Lawrence ("The Hunger Games: Catching Fire") will direct the BioShock film adaptation for Netflix.

"Hunger Games" director Francis Lawrence will direct the long-gestating BioShock film adaptation for Netflix, the streaming platform announced Thursday. Michael Green will write the script.

Netflix announced its plan to partner with BioShock's publisher 2K Games, and its parent company, Take-two Interactive, on the adaptation in February. Deadline reports the directing and writing assignments were highly sought after, and that Netflix has been eyeing Lawrence for the top job since spring.

Lawrence took over the Hunger Games films with "Catching Fire," the second in the series. The film was a financial and critical success, and helped propel the franchise to its massive popularity. He is currently directing the prequel film, "Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," which is slated to premiere in 2023.

While Lawrence works on that project, Green will adapt the script. Gren is best known for writing the script for "Logan," "Blade Runner 2049," and Kenneth Branagh's two Agatha Christie adaptations: "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Death on the Nile."

Netflix did not provide a timetable for when the film would arrive.
