Mason Mount could be out until the October international break following reports of hamstring injury and up to six week absence.

Manchester United confirmed earlier this week that summer signing Mason Mount will be ruled out until after the September international break through injury. But the timeframe was vague, whule the nature of the problem also was not disclosed.

Mount was forced off towards the end of United’s Premier League defeat to Tottenham last Saturday evening and his injury was described by the club as a “small complaint”.

Now, a report from the Telegraph suggests it is a hamstring issue and his absence could last for up to six weeks – that would mean being sidelined until early October and missing early Champions League games in addition to those in the Premier League.

The best case scenario for United appears to be a four-week layoff.

Six weeks would take Mount’s absence right up to the October international break and the possibility of missing eight games in all competitions.

As a minimum, the England international won’t play when United host Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford this coming weekend (26 August), or when they face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium the following Sunday (3 September). Even a four-week absence would make returning in time for gamesa against Brighton (16 September) and Burnley (23 September) questionable.

United will finish September with a visit from Crystal Palace and then host Brentford a week into October, before that month’s international break kicks in.

In amongst those domestic fixtures will be two Champions League group games on 19/20 September and 3/4 October, with the draw for that stage of the competition to take place next Thursday (31 August) when the qualifying rounds have concluded.
