'Killers of the Flower Moon' premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received a nine-minute standing ovation

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: With thunderous applause at the Cannes, Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ has been making headlines for all the right reasons. The three-and-a-half-hour drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone in the lead has garnered positive reviews, which are already flooding the internet five months before its theatrical release.

Marking DiCaprio’s return to the big screen, the movie is slated to be released in selected cities on October 6 before expanding nationwide on October 20 ahead of its release on Apple TV+. The crime drama, set in the 1920s, is based on David Grann’s non-fiction book of the same name, which focuses on the FBI's investigation into a string of brutal murders of Osage Nation Native Americans, which came to be known as the Reign of Terror. 'Killers of the Flower Moon', with a $200 million budget, is produced by Scorsese's Sikelia Productions and DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions and released by Paramount Pictures.

'Why have the reviews dropped so early?'

On Saturday, May 20, 'Killers of the Flower Moon' premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received the longest standing ovation of nine minutes. Following its premiere at Cannes, a number of movie critics delivered their reviews, with many describing the drama as "classic cinema." Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes also gave it a 96% rating. However, while many social media users praised the positive reviews, others were outraged by their release five months before the film's theatrical debut.

“Why have the reviews dropped so early? The film doesn't release until October... Like I know it was at Cannes, but I thought there would be an embargo this far from release,” one user said. “It comes out in October, how does it have 20 reviews?” a second user said while the third wrote, "What??? I thought it was coming out in October??” “It’s quite annoying to have a movie premiere four months before the public can see it,” a user commented. “I’m kay not consuming any more killers of the flower moon content cause I don’t want any accidental spoilers but the initial reviews are PHENOMENAL LETS GOOOOOO,” another user said.

'There was lots of grass’

Following the standing ovation at Cannes, the 80-year-old Scorsese thanked the audience saying, “Thank you to the Osages. Everyone connected with the picture. My old pals Bob and Leo, and Jesse and Lily. We shot this a couple of years ago in Oklahoma. It’s taken its time to come around but Apple did so great by us. There was lots of grass. I’m a New Yorker. I was very surprised. This was an amazing experience. We lived in that world,” reports Variety. The film is DiCaprio's first big-screen release since Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood' in 2019. He also had a role in the Netflix-streamed movie 'Don't Look Up' from 2021.
