Daniel Levy hits back at suggestions Tottenham don't spend enough in the transfer market.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has rejected claims the club has not backed previous managers in the transfer market.

Former boss Antonio Conte slammed the club's outlook before his departure in March, while Jose Mourinho had also asked for more funds to be made available.

Large fees have been splashed on the likes of Richarlison, Cristian Romero and Pedro Porro among others in the past two years but Spurs could only limp to a finish of eighth in the 2022/23 Premier League despite being in Champions League contention for most of the season.

Levy rejected dismissed suggestions his club have not been active enough in the market. He said in a meeting with the club's new fan advisory board: "The notion that Tottenham haven't backed certain managers is incorrect.

"We're currently paying the price, perhaps, where some of the acquisitions have not turned out to be as we hoped."

The north London club have now turned to Ange Postecoglou with the hope of a more attacking approach after fans grew disillusioned with the football on show from Conte's side.

Levy added: "We made a conscious decision that we wanted a coach who would understand what we really wanted as a club, which was to play attacking football, to enable everyone to enjoy coming to a match and be entertained, and also someone who understood the importance of the academy."

90min understands Spurs are locked in talks with Leicester for attacking midfielder James Maddison, who is also a long-term target for Newcastle. Postecoglou has given the green light for his new club to chase the England international as well as Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, with captain Hugo Lloris expected to move on this summer.

Tottenham have also told star striker Harry Kane they do not plan to sell him amid interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid, the latter of whom are searching for a replacement for Karim Benzema.
