US men’s national team head coach Anthony Hudson has departed the organization for ‘a new opportunity.’

As previously reported by 90min, Hudson had been approached by the Oman Football Association with the proposition of taking their head coach job, while Iran continued to show interest as well.

Hudson first joined US Soccer in January 2020, serving as head coach of the Under-20 side before becoming an assistant to Gregg Berhalter in 2021. The Englishman formed part of the USMNT coaching staff at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, gaining valuable experience.

In January 2023, Sporting Director Earnie Stewart appointed Hudson as interim head coach of the senior team, hastily replacing Berhalter. The news came after U.S. Soccer confirmed the launch of an independent investigation into an allegation against the former manager on December 11, 2022.

Hudson led the USMNT to several friendly and Nations League matches, seeing a success rate that attracted international attention. He was supposed to stay through August, but has since been released of the contract.

B.J. Callaghan will now step in to replace Hudson as interim manager, while US Soccer continues the search for a permanent replacement. Sporting director Matt Crocker insisted the organization aims to “make an appointment by the end of the summer.”

The new temporary replacement is set to lead the United States in the upcoming Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup tournaments this summer.

“B.J. has been an integral part of the USMNT staff during the last four years as this young team has grown and developed,” Crocker said in a release.

“Working alongside Anthony Hudson these last five months, we are confident he is prepared and ready to lead this group in the summer tournaments. We are grateful to Anthony for the tremendous job he did and wish him success in the future.”
